Cheltenham Town manager Martin Allen believes the appointment of Alan Fettis as chief scout is crucial to the club's hopes of success in the future.

The 37-year-old former Northern Ireland international was already on the pay roll as goalkeeping coach and has now agreed to take on the new role as Allen continues his overhaul of the League One side.

"Alan is a very important appointment for me and the club and it represents a big step forward," said Allen.

"Alan will be responsible for putting together a team of scouts around the country so that we can have opposition watched, players watched and build-up a little network.

"Player recruitment is probably No 1 important thing in a manager's job and is top of my list.

"You can be the best manager, the best coach, have the best training ground and kit but if your player recruitment is pants you have got no chance.

"That's why it is so important to have Alan on board to help me."

On the players front Allen confirmed that Leicester City winger Jonny Hayes has signed a one-month extension to his current loan deal while he is also optimistic that Lewis Montrose (Wigan) and Josh Payne (West Ham) will also stay after their initial deals run out after tomorrow's game at Carlisle United.

"I have to speak to their respective clubs but they are keen to stay here and that is a very good sign," added Allen.

Allen confirmed that Craig Armstrong has signed a two-month loan deal at Burton Albion but Aaron Ledgister has declined a settlement offer to terminate his contract so will be staying at Whaddon Road.
