Weston Grand Pier pavilion demolished

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 20:28

This photograph shows the bare Grand Pier four months after it was ravaged by a fire – a view that marks the start of a new era for the 104-year-old landmark.

The demolition of the fire ravaged pavilion is complete and more than 500 tons of twisted steel and blackened wood have been removed from the pier in Weston-super-Mare.

TR Demolition took one month to complete the mammoth task. Now the underside of the pier is being sandblasted and experts are testing the supporting metal piles.

The new pavilion is to be a futuristic leisure complex designed by Bristol-based architect Angus Meek. The design will house new rides chosen from theme parks around the world including a "dark ride" and a wider go kart track.

Pier owners Kerry and Michelle Michael are to submit plans for new rides to North Somerset Council before Christmas.
